Filming Diary, Monday 01/03/2010, Test shoot

On Monday the 1st of March I drove us to Camber sands along with our 3 looks, cameras tripods and helping hands to document what we did. We had out lined a rough story board to get a feel for the story and where we would shoot in the sand dunes and on the beach. We had intended to if possible get some footage however it was far to sunny with a gorgeous blue sky, this was not melancholic, but allowed us to plan in comfortable weather conditions and eventually get closer to a finalized story board!

We tested doing the hair and make up on location in conveniently placed public toilets! We would have to at times be able to re touch and re do hair based on the extreme wind and potential rain of our location. We needed to work with the weather as it is a key part in our film to evoke the melancholic feel.

MAKEUP

The makeup was inspired by shoots and editorials found promoting Marko's work. We thought it would be best to promote his strong looks in a similar way to stay loyal to his designs and image. We however styled in a way that felt more melancholic and less fierce and powerful as his images. We kept the structured eyebrows for a sci fi look and false lashes under the eyes similar to that we had found. Many of his clothes were styles with a plaited mask which we found to threatening and to strong for the mood we wanted. We incorporated plaits into the hair though.

HAIR

Heidi and i felt the hair should have a hair piece rather than making a dominant structure, as our designer has had his models hair styled in this way. We felt that for a melancholic feel the hair should be able to flow a bit and tie in the other element to our project, wind. Heidi and Charlotte experimented with different ways of tying my hair up and fastening the head piece we had made. From our research of the film 'Piano' references were made of the lead character Ada and her plated hair style complete with a bun. We wanted a feminine romantic construction that complimented the clothing but didn't over power. The challenge was to create something that would be durable in the wind as this was our main issue.

Charlotte our helping hands got some beautiful shots to get a feel for composition and placing of the dresses.
In this image Heidi was able to get footage of composing like the director Peter Weir in his film 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' the filming has been framed and focused on the foliage in front of me and the clothing which we thought worked nicely in a sequence of shots of the first outfit from different angles and prospectives.
