Music Video Research

We decided to look at music videos for some inspiration. Although the videos are not what we are wanting to replicate they are examples of some form of sorrow and melancholy.

Kylie Minogue and Nick Cave -Where The Wild Roses Grow
This music video is based on Eliza being murdered by her boyfriend- which as a theme is more horrific than melancholic, but we thought the setting portrayed melancholy really well with a subtle haze. With a location next to a river with grass Kylie lies in the elements. A rose is placed in her mouth combined with her pale complexion and blood red lips everything is symbolic and beautiful. This is the underlying melancholy with romance.

Beyonce- Broken Hearted Girl

The above images give an idea of our story board for our film of a lost love the title dictates this mood greatly. This film worked as inspiration due to the fact it has effects we wish to use in the rose scene. Beyonce pulls petals off one by one but it is filmed backwards. There are also scenes of overlapping imagery which we want to have a go at. Peter Weir uses fading and over lapping imagery and its good to see this technique in different situations. We liked the way the visuals changed from colour to black and white. This is something we can use metaphorically with black and white for sadness and colour for the happier scenes towards the end of our film.

The below image shows a technique using mirror imagery. This shot was one of the strongest throughout the video evoking melancholy with the character moving on a journey. At the same time the character flowing clothing and props like the rose add movement and enforce the romantic vibe.
