Wednesday was a soul-destroying disaster at times!! Heidi and i found our selves with no helping hands on this day as our helpers were unavailable. We decided to continue on our own and see what we could get done. We set off at half past 7 getting there around half 8 with perfect weather and the tide was nicely far out. The weather was really windy so we had to make sure my hair and makeup were secure and we looked at our rough notes so i could brace myself for the cold and complete what we needed as fast and efficient as possible. The cold became a big problem throughout the day.
We found that on early arrival the conditions were perfect but hadn't considered the impact on myself as the model or Heidi filming hand held. The cold wind made my hands and skin go pink effecting the look and the wind was so strong it pulled the hair back a to much, loosing the romantic effect and striking shapes of the clothes. Heidi found that the sand was such an uneven surface at times that the movement of the camera was to shaky and unsmooth. We did want a shaky quality to the filming as inspired by David Lynches films but we found it tough getting that quality on sand that moves and changes course in the sand dunes.
Another issue we had is the wonderfully large heels bought to compliment the outfits just sank in the sand threatening my ankles lives, and looking awkward and impossible to walk on sand. We would hope to resolve this with strategically placed boards to get the height. Heidi was successful at filming from laying on the sand looking up the shapes were captured affectively.
As we fought the elements to try and get the idyllic footage my eyes started to stream with wind and sand in them. This resulted in my eyeliner running, and the eyelash glue loosening. No amount of re touching and reapplying could work as my eyes kept running every time we went back out on the sand.
We had no choice but to try and film other footage for the day in the form of letters burning. We decided i should get up earlier than 6am and fasten the eyelashes really securely with lots of glue and dry them with a hair dryer so they set and my eyes would have the chance to not get to irritated. Our attempt at filming letters burning was also a failure due to high winds and no amount of strategic placing and sheltering was creating the desired composition.
That night i decided to experiment with our house hold log fire turning the lights off ad zooming right into different compositions.
This attempt at home works beautifully at creating a composition and with help from my Dad we got the timing just right. On showing the footage to Heidi we really liked the way the flames and burning start at the Marko illustration and work out twisting and turning. Our concern however was that my living room way far to dark and of a different atmosphere to the out door camber sands and this would not work as apart of a sequence of out door shots. We decided to persevere and try again multiple times at Camber sand dunes.
From this day we learnt we had to just keep coming back with many early mornings and re shoots until conditions were what we were after and i was able to produce the images in our story board. This was one of the most testing days of any project i have done particularly because i am a very cold person. We couldn't imagine getting a model/ actress to give up so much un known time, unpaid, to stand in these conditions. It also seemed easier as i could drive and also project what is in mine and Heidi's heads
of the story and movements. We would try and work together going over the footage again and again. We found the day a struggle also as we were not able to have helping hands from my boyfriend Danny and our friend Charlotte.
Trying to keep a positive mind and strategy became important and although we left earlier than intended Heidi and I talked over what needed to happen the next day and in what order.
